Ken Kolodner - Hammered Dulcimer
Getting beyond the melody: arranging waltzes and other slow tunes. Waltzes are a gold mine for arranging and varying your playing. This workshop will answer the question “Once you have the basic tune, what is next?” Depending on level, ideas may include 2 note chords, three or four note chords, tremolos, phrasing, creating a dynamic line, flams, fills, dissonances, basslines, syncopations, accent shifts, use of simple and complex chord subs, bounced and hammered triplets and much more. INTERMEDIATE

Shifting accents and using syncopations in dance music: French Canadian tunes. Gaining popularity in the US among traditional musicians, French-Canadian tunes have a distinct feel and rhythm with much syncopation. This workshop will attempt to communicate that feel and introduce the participants to some exciting French-Canadian repertoire. (This workshop can also be done with old time music but not typically Irish repertoire.)

Leading with the left. For those right hand dominant players, this workshop will force you to lead with the left for a few different types of tunes. This workshop is intended to make you suffer and build character, while showing you the advantages of a left hand lead! Advanced beginners on up.

Beautiful Bear Meadow Dulcimers

Dwain Wilder - Mountain Dulcimer
How are all those fancy scrolls made that you see on violins, cellos and the Bear Meadow Appalachian dulcimers? Dwain will conduct a workshop "Carving the Full Scroll Peghead". Participants will have an introduction to the carving techniques involved in producing a three-dimensional complex carved scroll through simple, easy to master steps. This will be both a demonstration and participatory event where attendees will have an opportunity to acquire (or excersize) their own skills with chisels, gouges, saws and knives.

Is the tonal characteristics of a musical instrument a matter of chance? Can you really predict the voice a musical instrument is going to have even before it is built? Dwain will lead a workshop in "A Technique for Tonewood Evaluation and Selection." Participants will learn the technique of listening to tonewoods to evaluate them in terms of the sounds they are capable of producing in the dulcimer they are used in, and how a particular selection of a board's sounds affect tone and voice.
